Where modern design meets Scotland’s wild beauty

A new book, Scottish Modern, has been launched by award-winning architects Andrew Brown and Kate Brown, founders of Brown & Brown. The publication offers an in-depth exploration of the studio’s distinctive approach to contemporary home design, rooted in Scotland’s stunning landscapes and built traditions while embracing modernist clarity, craft and innovation.

Established in Royal Deeside in 2010, the practice has built a reputation for creating individual, highly contextual homes that respond sensitively to both client aspirations and the character of their surroundings. Their work has drawn national and international recognition, including Architecture Practice of the Year at the Scottish Design Awards in 2022.

Scottish Modern presents a portfolio of the studio’s most celebrated projects across varied and dramatic settings, from the banks of the Firth of Clyde and the rugged terrain of the Cairngorms National Park to residential neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

The practice’s work now extends beyond Scotland to the Outer Hebrides, the Lake District and even the Italian Riviera, always carrying with it a commitment to context, connection and the emotional resonance of home.

“Architecture is a story from concept to realisation,” say the Browns. “By listening to clients and understanding place, we craft homes that support everyday rituals, capture light and landscape, and become part of people’s lives for generations.”

More than a portfolio, Scottish Modern is a reflection on the meaning of home in contemporary life – an exploration of slow, considered design and the enduring importance of spaces that foster comfort, memory and belonging. The book, which officially launches on May 19, is set to appeal to architects, students and anyone interested in the relationship between modern design, landscape and the lived experience of home.
