The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, launched ??Build Your Own Home ?? the London Way??, an £8million fund to encourage Londoners to build innovative homes and community facilities, aimed at putting design and architectural excellent at the heart of community building projects, in July of this year. The scheme allows Londoners to apply for a share of an £8million fund via loans or grants from the Government??s ??Custom Build?? or ??Community Right to Build?? schemes.
Jamie Ratcliff, area manager, housing and land directorate for the Greater London Authority, is sharing his insight on how to capitalise on Boris Johnson??s self-build in London scheme on Friday, 28 September 2012, at The National Home Improvement Show, London Olympia. The seminar ??How to self-build in London?? enables attendees to gain a clear understanding of the mayor??s ??Build Your Own Home ?? the London Way?? initiative. This is the first time Londoners will be able to hear how to get involved in the scheme and ask questions about it.
Ratcliff??s seminar will focus primarily on how Londoners can apply for funding. Within the total £8million worth of funding, there is £5million of development finance, available on a commercial repayable basis, for custom build homes and £3million of revenue grants for organisations interested in applying for Community Right to Build Orders. In addition, the seminar will include an introduction to the scheme, description of a showcase site for self-build in Custom House, how the Mayor is encouraging London boroughs to bring forward land for self-build and how individuals can group together or work with enabling developers or housing associations. Jamie will also be available for any general questions about self-build following the seminar.
Michael Holmes, spokesperson for The National Home Improvement Show says: ?The ??Build Your Own Home ?? the London Way?? scheme is the ideal opportunity for Londoners, specifically small developers wanting to make a difference, to take advantage of the available funds and deliver homes and community facilities to London. It allows much needed creativity to come into fruition and increase the capitals housing supply.??
