Architectural glazing experts Maxlight are renowned for their innovative range of windows and doors. Founded 13 years ago by Tony Culmer with a clear focus on reducing the visual impact of structural elements in glazing, Maxlight has become a leader in the field of minimalist glazing solutions.
Maxlight are passionate about collaborating on projects from the outset, working closely with architects to bring their creative visions to life. By designing and producing their products in London, they keep manufacturing fully in-house, which gives them complete control over quality and timelines. Their extensive experience, paired with the energy of their 70+ dedicated staff, allows them to execute projects with precision, efficiency, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Here, Natalie Wong, Marketing Lead at Maxlight, goes into detail about their exqusite work on the Weald House project by Mailen Design and Peter Bradford Architects.
Tell us about your involvement on the Weald House project.
At Weald House, our approach to working with the architects was exemplified by our early collaboration with the design team. From the outset, we provided custom drop-in CAD blocks, allowing the architects to achieve precise detailing and a seamless transition from concept to completion.
Our understanding of the clients’ vision was essential to the project’s success. The homeowners drew inspiration from Japanese minimalist architecture and modern New Zealand homes, with an emphasis on creating a home office that would allow them to enjoy the surrounding landscape. This vision informed our recommendations, particularly the specification of our super narrow-framed sliding doors. These doors provide uninterrupted sightlines, connecting interior spaces with the outdoors while maintaining both security and privacy through their strong yet minimal profile.
What products did you specify for Weald House in order to balance the residents’ need for security and privacy as well as their desire for open views?
We specified premium, high-quality glass throughout the project. The design maximizes light and scenery on the south-facing side with full-height glass doors and windows overlooking the meadow and woodland, allowing for unobstructed views in a private setting. On the side facing the drive, discreetly integrated doors and windows provide access and natural light while maintaining a sense of privacy. This collaboration resulted in a home that feels both secure and beautifully connected to its surroundings.
Were there any learnings from Weald House that have shaped your approach to residential projects?
Absolutely. As mentioned, at Weald House, we had the opportunity to collaborate closely with the architects from an early stage. This allowed us to provide detailed drop-in blocks, helping the architects finalize their finishes and achieve a seamless integration of our glazing solutions. That early collaboration emphasized the importance of design clarity from the outset, ensuring that the result is as cohesive and enduring as possible. It is a reminder that time invested upfront in choosing the right materials, maximizing light, and considering every detail pays off for the building’s entire lifespan.
From this experience, we have also honed our product range to prioritize high-quality, highly specified items that bring the best to residential projects. Rather than offering a broad, generic selection, we have refined our focus to deliver top-notch solutions to meet bespoke requirements across the UK.
What are you focused on for 2025?
As trends shift and more clients relocate to rural or coastal areas, we have responded by adapting our product range to meet the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. Since 2020, we have invested heavily in refining our glazing solutions to withstand harsher coastal environments without compromising on design or performance. Our commitment to continuous innovation and a close partnership with architects allows us to inspire bold, forward-thinking designs for clients seeking expansive, unobstructed views and sophisticated, durable solutions.
