RESTORATION OF HISTORIC HOME
Award winning architecture and interior design studio SHH has been instructed to restore a historic Grade II Listed residential building on Cadogan Place, within the Hans Town Conservation Area in Kensington. SHH’s proposal is twofold comprising the preservation of the historic value of the main dwelling and the reconstruction of the existing mews house (which was added later and dates from the early 2000’s) located at the rear of the site. The proposed elevation of the mews house draws inspiration from the site’s immediate surroundings and will remain in keeping with the typology of the conservation area. The proposal seeks to unite the street-scape by introducing a mansard roof to restore the roof line along the mews and to revamp the façade in fair-faced stock brick which is typical of the area.
TRANSFORMATION OF TEA FACTORY
Glenn Howells Architects is working on a masterplan to transform more than 10 acres of underutilised land, in Digbeth, Birmingham, which includes Typhoo Wharf and the historic Typhoo Tea Factory together with the adjoining canal basin. The project team which includes Stoford, Turley, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Growth Company, is preparing a comprehensive vision around Typhoo Wharf and the wider area,
which aims to deliver one of Birmingham’s first net zero buildings in construction. It is the latest signal of an exciting process of city-wide regeneration, building on the Commonwealth Games and HS2 in a ‘golden period’ for Birmingham, which will see it being transformed into a green and healthy, walkable / cyclable city. The landscape and urban realm of Typhoo Wharf will create a new canal side quarter centred around the unique
historic canal network, waterfront and warehouse buildings. Bringing people closer to nature, a vibrant new public square will open the views towards the former wharfage creating opportunities for water-based activities with cafe terraces overlooking the canal.
INNOVATIVE CULTURAL SPACE
Award-winning Israeli architecture firm Kimmel Eshkolot is being commissioned as the lead architect for the forthcoming Albania Jewish Museum, in Vlorë, a prestigious museum symbolizing the history of the Jewish community of Albania. Kimmel Eshkolot was the only Israeli architecture firm to be invited to propose for the museum, which will officially open in 2025. The museum embodies the future of sustainability in architecture and design by preserving large parts of an historical building, including a portion of its pitched roof, paying homage to the past, present and future of the Albanian Jewish community. In keeping with its sustainable approach to architecture, Kimmel Eshkolot will make the most use of the existing structure instead of a new-build, utilizing the thermal qualities of the original thick stone walls. Most of the new stone construction will be with a local stone from Albania, apart from an outdoor area which will be clad in Jerusalem stone from Israel.
GAME CHANGING ACTIVITIES HUB
A pioneering Warwickshire facility, which challenges the traditional notion of a leisure centre, has received planning permission thanks to sport and leisure specialists GT3 Architects. Located in Miners’ Welfare Park, the Bedworth Physical Activities Hub – delivered on behalf of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council – has been designed to be welcoming and inviting for all user groups. The new hub will replace an existing centre, providing a new set of facilities that better meets the needs of the local community, utilising GT3’s ‘people first’ approach. The facility includes a 25m eight lane pool, learner pool with a moveable floor, 120 station fitness suite, two studios, a spin studio and associated changing areas as well as a café and multipurpose room. In addition, the surrounding park will undergo a major transformation with a focus on creating an active landscape that wraps around the new building. The team’s project approach combines a unique blend of uses to create a leisure destination which will play a role in the regeneration of Bedworth and act as a catalyst for further future developments.
CONSENT FOR 100% AFFORDABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD
HOK’s London Studio (“HOK”) has secured detailed planning approval for a new neighbourhood of 92 homes in Northolt, 100% of which will be affordable, on behalf of Broadway Living, Ealing Council’s wholly-owned housing company. Northolt Grange, which was approved unanimously at committee, will sit on a one-acre site bordered by Rushdene Crescent, Hartfield Avenue and Down Way and will provide a mix of apartments and family houses, across a variety of housing tenures. The homes are set in a green and permeable neighbourhood which pedestrians can access from all sides, with the buildings set back 7m from the street to create green and active spaces, in line with the Healthy Streets approach adopted by the Greater London Authority. The landscape-led design will see the green streets connect to a new public park and creates a new entrance to the existing St Raphael’s primary school, allowing pupils and staff to enjoy the outdoor space. The neighbourhood also includes parking provision for 30 cars, accommodated away from view underneath a new 700m2 children’s playdeck, which connects directly to each of the buildings at first floor level. HOK’s design includes a modular approach to construction, with the homes comprised of a series of standardised stackable parts increasing quality, accelerating delivery and significantly reducing construction waste. HOK is the architect and landscape designer for the project.
