Two new bungalows built by Papworth Trust to enable residents with mobility impairments to enjoy long-term independent living, showcase how carefully considered planning and design can create energy efficient homes that offer accessibility, sustainability and affordability. As specialists in energy efficiency, Cambridge-based Green Heat worked closely with the Trust, builders C J Murfitt Limited and property consultants Bidwells to create the eco bungalows within the same footprint as a standard two-bedroom home. Green Heat completed an assessment and energy efficiency calculations to allow an increase in the areas of permitted glazing in the bungalows. Windows have been sized and located to serve internal spaces and accessibility with as much use of natural daylighting and ventilation as possible, with windowless spaces limited to storage only. The windows have also been located to give residents the best possible views around the site, while still protecting their privacy. With interest already shown by other housing providers, charities and local authorities, Papworth Trust aims to use this project as a demonstration of what is possible to build for disabled residents in the future.
