Eye on the prize

It took three years to redevelop the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. But the results have been spectacular as a much-cherished but ultimately flawed building was transformed into the highly accessible, environmentally-friendly and versatile modern building which was recently honoured with the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize 2014.

Regarded by many in Liverpool as an irreplaceable cultural institution, the theatre benefits from strong links to the city and community. Keeping those links alive while the theatre was under construction was not an easy task. However, thanks to a smart initiative by the Everyman, with the collaboration of live webcam service provider Streamdays, closing the doors on the public did not mean shutting them out of the transformation that was taking place. A network camera was installed and configured by the Streamdays team in time to provide HD quality images from the start of demolition work in July 2011, until after the final re-opening in March 2014. The live webcam enabled visitors to the theatre??s website to stay up-to-date by viewing the webcam as it moved through six different pre-set positions.
