Pro-tecting mental health facilities

79978.17119 Protan main
The latest in an award-winning new generation of mental health hospitals is using advanced roofing technology to achieve a durable, quality building for the future.

A key element of Mersey Care NHS Trust??s £25million, 80-bedroomed Clock View is its focus on single storey buildings around courtyards, with all the areas roofed using single ply membrane. Richmond Roofing, for main contractor Farrans, utilised almost 7000m2 of Protan SE1.8mm single ply, mechanically fixed over a vapour control layer, to construct the facility??s roofs.

Managing director of Richmond Roofing Lawrence Miller commented, ?The client wanted single ply, with a 30 year guarantee. Protan was the most competitive solution capable of delivering the assured longevity, quality and performance needed.??

On the site of the former Walton Hospital, Clock View is one of a series of new mental health units purpose-designed to provide light and airy spaces to help deliver effective and efficient care & treatment. In addition to individual bedrooms, the centre includes learning and education spaces, a café, therapy/activity spaces, a gymnasium and office accommodation.

Mersey Care NHS Trust, under its TIME (To Improve Mental Health Environments) scheme, won a national BREEAM award for Phase I- which includes Clock View- of its programme to provide new mental health facilities across the city. The facilities are set to attain an Excellent BREEAM rating.

Protan SE membrane is certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company??s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK??s Warrington office.
