2014 Commonwealth Games Showcase Tobermore Products

Tobermore, an award winning Northern Ireland based paving manufacturer supplying products throughout the UK and Ireland, have just supplied £350,000 of products to the prestigious Emirates Arena in the East End of Glasgow. This arena forms one of the most versatile structures of its kind in Europe and is scheduled to play host to the eagerly anticipated 2014 Commonwealth Games. With more than 10,000 people passing through the doors on opening weekend in October 2012, the Emirates Arena has quickly become a city landmark. As well as accommodating international competitions, the venue will aid the development of the next generation of Scottish athletes and offers state of the art facilities for the community.

The complex facilitates numerous sports halls, 4 outdoor five-a-side pitches, a fitness studio and spa, media areas and conference / office areas, not to mention holding a 6500 spectator capacity! The Emirates Arena also holds Scotland??s first indoor Velodrome. The Velodrome cost £100 million to construct over a period of 3 years. Owned by Glasgow City Council, it has been proudly named ??The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome?? in honour of British gold medal-winning Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy. The widely acclaimed athlete has become an ambassador for track cycling in the U.K and has shared how privileged he feels in having his namesake attached to this amazing piece of architecture, describing the arena as the “best in the world.”

The architecture for the home of the forthcoming games was designed by Glasgow firm, Scott Bennett Architects. Sir Robert McAlpine, based in Edinburgh, worked as the main contractor to produce the venue which has “already secured its place on the global sporting page” according to the contractor. Fellow Scottish construction company, Land Engineering, acted as Sub-Contractor on this large scale project.

Tobermore paving products were specified to provide the beautiful pristine finish around this iconic arena. The groundwork??s of the arena consist of a combination of rich block paving designs including stunning Sienna Duo in Sandstone and Graphite. The textured surface of Tobermore??s Sienna range exposes sparkling granite aggregates which provide a distinctive appearance similar to natural granite. The paving scheme also features Tobermore??s Hydropave Sienna Duo in Silver and Graphite and Hydropave in Natural, Bracken and Charcoal. The incorporation of the Hydropave paving product range ensures long term sustainability for the external landscape of the Emirates Arena. Hydropave products are a permeable paving solution for effective water drainage and for removing pollutants.
