New green accreditation obtained

Profile 22 the social housing and new build specialist has become the first systems businesses to secure the green standard BES6001 across its foiled and standard PVC-U window and door ranges. The Epwin Group commercial systems specialist joins a handful of building product companies to have secured the new standard meeting a range of strict criteria ensuring responsible sourcing of construction products.

Including an assessment of organisational governance, supply chain management and social and environmental impact, the new standard was written into the Code for Sustainable Homes in late 2010. In securing the qualification across its window and door framing systems and ancillary products, it gives specifiers and architects access to the sector??s most comprehensively accredited systems.

Andrew Reid, commercial development director, Profile 22 says: ?In selecting their supply partners, developers and housing providers must be certain that they are able to demonstrate with absolute transparency how and from where building materials are sourced and manufactured. BES6001 delivers exactly that clarity to the procurement process and not least the supply chain. For us, more broadly as a business, it is confirmation of the lead that Profile 22 has delivered on sustainable manufacturing within the window and door sector.??

BES6001 ??pulls?? together a number of other standards to demonstrate a commitment to responsible sourcing of materials. The Profile 22 extrusion operation secured the new standard after previously securing the quality management standard ISO9001, the environmental management standard ISO14001, occupational health and safety OHSAS18001.

As part of its assessment Profile 22??s extrusion operation, which last year secured an Investor in People Gold Standard, also had to demonstrate commitments to the continual training and development of its workforce. Reid continues: ?We have gone through a very comprehensive assessment. This has included analysis of the integrity of our own supply chain, plus commitments to monitor and reduce our transport impacts and to monitor and reduce our energy consumption as part of the Climate Change Agreement.??

This is the latest in a series of sustainability firsts for Profile 22, which launched its award winning fully recycled profile Reco22 as a commercial proposition last year. Using just six percent of CO2 in production as profile extruded from virgin material, the system was first produced as a concept in 2004, going on to claimed the Best Recycled Product, at the National Recycling Awards in 2009.

Reid concludes: ?House builders, and particularly those working in the social sector, can??t afford to lose contracts or miss out on new business, because their sustainability claims don??t stand up to scrutiny, while social housing providers don??t want to find that their supply partners are less credible than they may have believed. BES6001 is a tool which can be used by both house builders and housing providers to ensure that chain of custody but also critically, reputations, remain intact.??
